John's BBQ sauce

Here's the BBQ sauce recipe. You will want to tweak the ingredients to your own taste. When we used this on salmon for the recipe that's in the Belly Fat Cure, we used a little more lime zest to make it a little more citrus-y and brighter. If you can't find the Westbrae ketchup or Joseph's maple syrup at Whole Foods, they are both available on Amazon.

We figure that 1 serving (2 tbls) has 1g sugar and 2g carbs

John's BBQ Sauce:

1 bottle Westbrae Natural Vegetarian Unsweetened Ketchup (from Whole Foods)
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1 1/2 tsp. dry mustard
1 tbls chili powder
1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 to 3/8 c. white vinegar (to taste)
1/3 c.Joseph's Sugar free maple syrup (from Whole Foods)
1 tsp. grated lime peel or lime juice
1 tsp "Better than Boullion" beef base
1 1/2 tsp liquid smoke (to taste)

Put ketchup in a saucepan on low heat. When warm add salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, dry mustard, and chili powder, and stir well to combine. Add the rest of the ingredients, stirring after the addition of each ingredient. Cover, crack lid to let steam escape, and simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Enjoy!

  1. thanks for the recipe. I have most of the ingredients except for the ketchup & syrup. I'll have to check out our whole foods. Can't wait to try.
